The Seattle Sockeyes are a professional ice hockey team in the Western Hockey League (WHL). The team is based in Seattle, Washington, and plays its home games at the accesso ShoWare Center in Kent, Washington. The Sockeyes are the only WHL team in the United States, and are one of the most successful teams in the league, having won two WHL Championships and two Memorial Cups.

History

The Seattle Sockeyes were founded in 1994 as an expansion team in the WHL. The team's first season was a success, as the Sockeyes finished with a record of 32-28-6, good for fourth place in the West Division. The Sockeyes made their first WHL playoff appearance in 1996, but were eliminated in the first round by the Kamloops Blazers.

The Sockeyes won their first WHL Championship in 2005, defeating the Kelowna Rockets in the finals. The Sockeyes also won the Memorial Cup that year, becoming the first American team to win the prestigious tournament. The Sockeyes won their second WHL Championship in 2008, defeating the Vancouver Giants in the finals.
