About the Author

J.R.R. Tolkien was an English writer, poet, philologist, and university professor, best known as the author of The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings.

Tolkien was born in Bloemfontein, South Africa, in 1892. He moved to England with his family when he was three years old. He attended King Edward's School in Birmingham and then Exeter College, Oxford, where he studied English language and literature.
