The Cambodian Genocide
The Cambodian genocide was a horrific event that took place from 1975 to 1979. During this time, the Khmer Rouge regime, led by Pol Pot, killed an estimated 1.7 million people, or about one-quarter of the Cambodian population.
The Khmer Rouge targeted anyone who they perceived as a threat to their revolution, including intellectuals, professionals, and anyone who had contact with the outside world. Women were particularly targeted, as they were seen as a threat to the regime's patriarchal values.
The Killing Fields
The Killing Fields were execution sites where the Khmer Rouge carried out their mass murders. The fields were often located in remote areas, and the victims were often buried in mass graves.
The Killing Fields are a powerful reminder of the horrors of the Cambodian genocide. They are also a place of pilgrimage for survivors and their families.
The Six Women
The Killing Fields Harvest of Women tells the stories of six women who survived the Cambodian genocide. These women come from different backgrounds and have different experiences, but they all share a common bond: they have witnessed the horrors of genocide and they have survived to tell their stories.
The six women are:
- Loung Ung: A young girl who witnessed the death of her family and was forced to work in a labor camp.
- Chum Mey: A doctor who was tortured and imprisoned by the Khmer Rouge.
- Haing Ngor: A doctor who escaped from Cambodia and went on to win an Academy Award for his role in the film The Killing Fields.
- Pol Pot's Daughter: The daughter of the Khmer Rouge leader, who defected from the regime and has dedicated her life to fighting against genocide.
- Youk Chhang: A human rights activist who has worked to document the Cambodian genocide.
- Somaly Mam: A survivor of sexual slavery who has become a leading advocate for women's rights.
